What is the proper R-Value for Michigan Attics?

In 2008, the Department of Energy increased their recommendation for insulation in attics. DOE Recommendation.

In SE Michigan, the Department recommends that homeowners have an R-Value as high as R60.  This is a little bit higher than Michigan's Residential Building code.

We have been inside thousands of attics, and we find that most are under insulated.

Product     R-Value R49 (code)  R60 (DOE Recommended)
TAP Insulation 3.7 13.3 inch 16.2 inch
Fiberglass Batts 2.2 22.0 inch 27 inch
Fiberglass, Loose 2.5 19.6 inch 24.0 inch

R-value is a measurement that us used to describe the effectiveness of insulation.  It does a good job at measuring conduction - however it does a poor job measuring convection and radiation.  These other forms of heat transfer are important in maintaing a stable temperature in your home.

Cellulose insulation is a great product to mitigate all 3 types of heat transfer: Convection, Conduction & Radiation.

Convection:  Transfer of heat by moving air.

Conduction:  Transfer of heat through a solid object, such as drywall.

Radiation:  Transfer of heat in the form of electromagnetic waves, such as the sun heating up a roof.

In addition to R-Value, you need to review the effectiveness of the insulation from air infiltration.  Although, fiberglass is easy to install, it allows air to flow through it, so it is less effective.

TAP

Cellulose Insulation Installer - Michigan

TAP Insulation is made from cellulose.  Cellolose insulation is a great insulatior, and when treated with the proper concentration of borates, provides pest control.  We provide attic cleanouts and have equipment to remove damaged insulation such as cellolose or fiberglass.  If your existing insulation is not damaged, then cellulose insulation can be installed right on top of your existing fiberglass or cellulose insulation.
