Is Your House Icing Up?  Ice Dams, Ice Cycles, Insulation

According to the Dept of Energy, checking your home's insulation is the quickest and most cost effective ways to improve the efficiency & comfort of your home.

Under-insulated homes are easy to spot:
1) The homes are glistening with ice cycles.
2)  Are burdened with ice damming.
3)  Are snow free (when other homes are fully covered).

Furnaces in these homes run extra hard to keep the house warm.  However, the heat escapes through the roof, melting snow.  As the water travels off the roof, it freezes over the unheated eves leading to ice cycles or ice damming.

From our experience in SE Michigan attics, most are severely under-insulated.  Additionally, many have portions of the attic without insulation.

How much insulation do I need?  The current Michigan code is R-49.  This requires 15 inches of Fiberglass or 14 inches of Cellulose.

If you do not have adequate insulation inside your attic, the payback can be quick.
