Raccoon Trapping,
Removal and Control - MI
Raccoon —
Procyon lotor.
Perhaps Mother
Nature’s most adorable muggers and found throughout Michigan, these
medium-sized four legged mammals are natural bandits, as befitting a
critter that uses a black mask and adorable antics to conceal an
uncanny knack for becoming a nuisance in Oakland County
neighborhoods.
Ranging in
weight from 12 to 35 pounds, raccoons have masked faces and bushy
ringed tails. Nocturnal by nature, they will never-the-less make
occasional forays into the daylight, raiding an available garbage
can or otherwise intruding in our lifestyles.
Delightful to observe in Oakland County's natural settings, due to their playful attitude and an endless
foraging for food and man-made treasures. Raccoons present a real
threat when they cross over into our world. They can carry numerous
infectious diseases like rabies, along with fleas, ticks and lice,
not to mention mange, encephalitis, histoplasmosis, tuberculosis,
roundworms, and canine distemper. Many of these conditions can be
readily transferred to children and family pets alike. For these
reasons and many more, raccoon control should be left to our
animal control professionals.
Raccoons have a very diverse diet, and will gladly eat anything from
fruits, berries, amphibians, eggs, and insects. In the wild,
raccoons typically nest in hollow logs, tall trees or abandoned
tunnels. When they leave their natural environment, the issues
really arise. Try waking up one morning to discover your garbage
cans raided, and you will probably guess on the suspect. Urban
raccoons cause the bulk of homeownership woes, since they frequently
find our homes very accommodating. They’re often found living
comfortably in some of Oakland County's finest attics, walls, chimneys and under decks. Raccoons
don’t hibernate, choosing instead to remain active all year long.
They are, however, less active in Michigan's colder months.
