Raccoon Damage IdentificationRaccoons can cause significant damage to homes in Michigan. Raccoons are very resourceful creatures and can find a multitude of ways to get into trouble. Some of the common issues that we encounter are described below. Chimney - If you have a chimney that does not have a properly installed chimney cap, you risk having a raccoon taking up residence in your chimney. You may first discover the problem in the spring, when the female is looking for a place to raise her young. They will nest right above the flue - where they could accidentally get access to the inside of your home. Generally, people hear the young which can chatter when the mother returns with food. Attics / Walls - Raccoons are very good at climbing and using their hands. They can climb downspouts, trees, or a brick chimney to gain access to your home. They can tear through roofing material, screens and vents to get inside. Once inside an attic, they will find a comfortable place in the soffits, walls or a corner to relax during the day. Usually, people hear the raccoons running around the attic or on the roof during the night. You might observe muddy foot prints or scratch marks on frequently used access points. Digging - Raccoons are good at digging for grubs and earthworms for food. One of their favorite activities involves a yard with freshly laid sod. They will actually roll up the sod in search of tasty treats that await underneath. The evidence is easily seen in the morning following the event. Decks - Raccoons will take up residence under decks. Generally, the decks need to have suitable cover - such as being low to the ground or be surrounded by bushes or other vegetation. Evidence is usually seen after they raid a potted plant on the deck or get into the grill used the prior afternoon. Dens - Raccoons do not dig tunnels, but they will readily take up residence in both abandoned and occupied underground tunnels. They can be found to share the dens of groundhogs or skunks. We might encounter the raccoon while trapping for a groundhog that is causing damage to the garden.
