The species of bat that is found in SE Michigan homes is the Big Brown Bat. Although some species of bats are solitary animals, this particular bat lives in colonies - they live with friends.
If you discover a bat inside your home, it is not likely to be the only one. Bats found inside the home during the winter months indicates that the home is being used as a hibernaculea for the bats. The number of bats varies and can range from a half dozen to hundreds of bats. Typically, we do find smaller colonies of a dozen or so.
