Basic Biology of Wasps
Paper Wasps are common around homes in Michigan. They form rather simple nests where the cells are open to the elements. You will see active wasps on the outside tending to the larva or defending the nest. Often, the nests are under eves or in vents where they are protected from the elements.
Paper Wasps have a complete life cycle of four stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. The colony only lasts 1 year. In the Spring, nests are built initially for the season by the queen. By mid Summer there usually are a couple dozen members in the nest and they defend the nest aggressively. However, there can be much larger nests and colony sizes. Paper wasps do not readily attack people, they will sting if threatened to protect the nest. Often, people are stung when they accidentally run into paper wasp nests hidden around the home. The members die by the first hard frost. The only survor is the queen who takes shelter in safe areas under bark or hidden away with some other protection.
One good way to keep wasps from building nests on your home is by using our Primeter-Strike PLUS TM to prevent nests from being built.
